Year 5 visited the Waste Recycling Centre in Wrekenton this week. The visit was part of the Green Libraries Project that we are currently trialling. The project aims to teach children about environmental issues through a range of literacy activities. The visit to the centre was to supplement this knowledge and help children to understand what happens to waste.

We all had a tour of the site and found out how household waste is separated – there are lots of categories! We were also really fortunate to visit an area that is usually off limits to the general public, the warehouse that breaks down the waste, deciding what can be recycled and what needs to be transported to a larger waste centre to be disposed of.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit and asked lots of interesting questions. Quite a few were very keen on having a job there in future too!
