Year 5 began the Green Libraries Project this week. This is a joint project between Gateshead Libraries and Groundworks learning about the environment through stories and imagination. Each session is linked to a book, this week we heard the opening chapter of Vashti Hardy’s ‘Crowfall’. This linked really well with the task of making bird feeders and bird collages.

It was great to hear the chatter amongst the children as they worked, really developing their vocabulary around nature and the environment. It also reinforced the message of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’. Bird feeders were made from old plastic bottles and the children’s collages were made from the pages of old books that were unable to be used in the library.

The session ended with a poem ‘Toucan in the Square’ by Nicola Davies

Year 5 already can’t wait for next week!
