As part of our geography topic on Natural Resources, Year 5 have been learning about where their food comes from. They have been looking at food we have in school for teatime club to see where the food originates from.  They then used the internet to calculate food miles. Food miles are the distance the food travels.

The children developed their understanding of interdependence after finding out that our food comes from farms and plantations around the world.

We considered whether fewer miles is better for the environment. We researched and found out that sometimes greenhouses in the UK use a lot of energy for heating and lighting – often causing more CO2 than driving a truck from Spain to the UK with food. It sparked much debate in Year 5…
