An Evacuee’s Suitcase

This week, Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed exploring an evacuee’s suitcase filled with WW2 memorabilia . We found out that the suitcase belonged to a young boy who, in 1940, was evacuated from Newcastle to Penrith.

We looked through the suitcase and found lots of exciting artefacts from the 1940s including a ration book, a well-loved toy donkey and a fragile storybook gifted to the child by his parents. The children also enjoyed trying on the boy’s ‘Sunday best’ whilst playing a game of ‘House’.

We carefully handled each artefact and asked lots of questions about what each object was, why it might’ve been important to the boy and then reflected on what we had learned about the experiences of an evacuee to help inspire our writing next week.
